In this short 155 page informative non-fiction academic novel, I feel I have been taken to a world completely alien, despite growing up in a low income community myself. In truth, this world was alien to me because I made it alien. As a young man, I witnessed firsthand and recognized at an early age the self-destructive behavior amongst blacks within the black community. Not caring for academic progression, the tendency for imprudent behavior leading to criminal behavior, and women too often priding in their promiscuousness that always eventually lead to early pregnancy. I saw all of these things and decided I would not fall into the trap that cycled throughout my neighborhood. To do so, not only required physically removing myself from that environment (I switched to a magnet high school my junior year), but it also required that I removed myself mentally and emotionally, by claiming that these people were different from myself, in so much that they intentionally not allow themselves to progress. Along with it went my empathy for the black person, and replaced with ignorant opinion and naïve reasons to why blacks were such seemingly failures.
This book has been a significantly eye-opening experience. It has allowed me to put the cultural behavioral I have witnessed throughout my life into a categorical mental classification of awareness within the larger intellectual genome of understanding. I know now that the current situation of blacks have been very much influenced by racial policies that were both explicit, i.e. Jim Crow, and implicit, i.e. reduction of federal financial support of areas of high black populations such as the inner city. Additionally, I’ve been able to draw parallels in the African American plight and that of other black nations, such as that of Haiti, my country of birth, and recognize the traces of similar structural deficiencies put in place by centuries of racism.
This book neither shies away from analysis of the critique that blacks and the behavioral response that have arisen are now the culprits for their stagnated position within society and those alone. The author is unable to agree with these sorts of arguments as they seem to be unsubstantiated through even the most biased of academic research. According to the author, the clearest contrarian piece of evidence against cultural argument was the economic boom of the early 1990s. The rise in productivity, and domestic capital accruement, saw unprecedented decrease in unemployment throughout the U.S.. If cultural arguments were true, then unemployment in low income black communities would have stayed constant, or at least would have experienced a change that was lower than the rest of nation, but this was not seen. Given the OPPORTUNITY, poor blacks changed behavior that was previously attributed to condemnation engrained and sourced from their “culture.”
The author argues that America needs to change the language used during discussions of race and class. First the language needs to merge the rhetoric of both the right, whom tend to lean towards more of a cultural tone, and that of the left, whom tend to lean towards a restrictive structural tone, to properly appeal to a larger more section of Americans. Second, to face the structural issues facing low income blacks and other minorities and for such action to be truly effective, a problem must be executed with discretionary vocabulary, language, and tone that extols the virtues of America’s individualistic pathology to its advantage, such as labeling and designing such programs as `opportunity enhancing’ and `hand-up providing.’

I have purchased other body language books in the past and this one out does them. I have heard the author on talkshows the last couple years and was waiting for her to put out a book. It met my expatations. The book ties all the other information out there on the subject.
Old school body language books I have found are wrong and Janine lets the reader enjoy the new body language in a fun way and even has you check out yourself and how you present your body language to others.
Excellent book! I loved it so much I ordered one for my brother!
This is a great read for anyone who has been told their “demeanor” may put-off some people. Good tips on making a great first impression, and several little things to consider about the message you are sending people with you body. I got this mostly for job interview help but there are some good techniques for those in the dating scene.
After reading several other body language books, I kind of threw in the towel, so to speak, mainly because I just didn’t get much out of them. However, this one was different. It was very definitive and thorough. It does involve a plan, too, and something anyone can utilize into their day to day lives in order to understand what signals everyone is giving out. I thought the author did a stand-up job on this book and the seven day plan is something I can defintely use and not be too rushed to complete. I would most definitely recommend this one, as well as How to Meet and Pick Up Women.
A well written discussion of intelligent design and why that is the only explanation for creation. Especially useful because the author comes with a background in both natural sciences (he’s an MD) and physical science (degree in physics). Highly recommended. I give this text as a graduation gift to my physics students.
While there can never be a 100% correlation between science and theology this book excels in the volume of factual information supporting a non-probabilistic formation of the life-forms on earth. The data presented is broadly based and never relies on single-point examples.
In the context of the intelligent design vs Darwinian selection debate, the book does not attempt to prove a method or process of development of life as we know it, rather it focusses on the necessity for an ordered approach in order to achieve the complexity and inter-related functions.
No reader with an open mind will fail to find a very strong case against random evolution.
More Than Meets the Eye, is a wonderful, beautifully written book, covering many fascinating details about the human body systems, and relating God’s incredible design to His Word. Great for use in conjunction with a study of biology, this book fills in the gaps between merely studying the created, and studying God’s creation through His eyes.
This is most fascinating book with lots of information and copious footnotes. It is a well researched book and easy reading. It should be in everyone’s library.
Will not be to your liking if you prefer linear strightforward and conventional literature. This collection is more metaphorical and elliptical in nature. It does not really connect to anything or make for an enjoyable reading experience. I believe that some critics have discerned a connection between this author’s writing and that of Raymond Carver. I really can’t see any resemblance,
I decided to take a chance on this book since it was rated one of the best of 2007. Boy, was I disappointed. I found the short stories to be pointless, often difficult to understand what was actually going on versus what was merely happening in a character’s imagination, and unnecessarily lascivious. I found very few of the main characters to be in any way admirable or even compelling–most were pitiful at best.
This collection of short stories is very intimate and raw. I have to admit that Miranda July’s writing makes me uncomfortable, but it also rings true. Maybe it’s good to be made to feel uncomfortable. To have someone ask the hard questions without offering answers.
This is a very good modern short story book.
It is a very liberal book, meaning the short stories may deal with sex, drugs, etc.
Worthy of a read if you are interested.
This is a *quality* book filled with encouragement, insight, godly wisdom and gentle, but real challenges to better living. When I heard the title I thought it sounded like the kind of book that wouldn’t be very deep, but after seeing the good reviews I decided to give it a chance. Boy am I glad (and I’m learning not to judge a book by it’s title!). Lysa writes in a lively, conversational tone, filled with fun references and stories, but the content is much deeper, grounded in the depth of her love for and knowledge of Christ and desire to follow Him. She presents real-life challenges that many of us face on a daily basis and provides excellent council on how to live out life serving our Lord no matter what the circumstances may be. To put it simply, this is a good book and one I’m sure I will come back to many times again to be refreshed and redirected.
This book will help you in more ways than one. Lysa gets to the heart of being more than just someone who goes thru the reading and filling in the blanks of a Bible study. She is funny, relate-able and encouraging. We recently finished this study in our women’s Sunday school class using the video presentation. It was very good and I plan to go thru the study again on my own to really solidify some of the points she makes in becoming the woman that God wants you to be. Highly recommended.
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1COFQT4KLU2L4 If you are weary from the routine-oriented Christian path, it is perhaps because you have yet to experience the true miracle of a close connection with God, an understanding of what He has ready for you in this moment and on this earth. It is possible, of course, to move from one day to the next simply going through the motions of Christianity, which would necessarily involve prayer, service attendance, and generosity. But does that yield any degree of fulfillment when it comes to knowing God and experience Him personally and on a daily basis. Lysa TerKeurst’s newest book, Becoming More Than A Good Bible Study Girl, is offered as a retreat from this manner of Christian living and offers insight into the ways in which we personally can develop a closer and more intimate connection with the Lord. Based upon her personal experience, the book seeks to inform readers of there true potential as Christians. TerKeurst highlights points that provide you with an outlet for growth and transformation on many levels. It may be what God has in store for you anyway. TerKeurst is a recognizable figure in the Christian community. Not only is she an accomplished an award-winning author of faith-based works, but she is also the president of Proverbs 31 Ministries and co-host of its national radio program, which has hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Becoming More Than A Good Bible Study Girl will be an excellent reading for anyone who wishes to expand their understanding of what it means to be truly Christian or for readers who seek answers to the questions of God’s reason for placing you on this planet. It is a truly engaging read that will bring you into a deeper and more meaningful awareness of God’s plan for you.
I haven’t actually finished the book, but I’ve liked what I’ve read so far. I’m just not much of a non-fiction reader, which is why I struggle to finish the book. It’s not really told me anything new, but neither has it annoyed me, as non-fiction how-to-be-better books so often do.
On the other hand, I’m not sure why it’s got a ton of 5 star reviews either. The author’s writing style is nice but a bit silly sometimes (silly as to the point of ugh or ick; the sort where if you were her kid you’d have hand to head and be saying “Moooooooommmmm, you’re so corny” all whiny-like). I’ll definitely finish the book, just not in a timely manner.
A must read if you’re serious about customer experience at your company’s core. This book will help you to test what your company is made of! Jeanne provides a series of questions that will require deep thought for a serious assessment of the values in your company. These questions also become a guide in how to move your company to a customer centric culture.
This book is different than most. The examples are practical and provide insight into how these companies integrate key customer values into their company value system. You’ll find these values also have a direct impact on employee satisfaction, loyalty and retention. The book is an easy read with huge value.
During a time when garnering sales and finding and keeping customers is so critical, Jeanne Bliss’ new book[[ASIN:1591842956 "I Love You More Than My Dog": Five Decisions That Drive Extreme Customer Loyalty in Good Times and Bad]) is a real gem. She boils down great customer service to a few simple decisions that can help you get and stay on track to building a stronger and more satisfied (read; more productive and profitable) customer base. Every employee should have Jeanne’s book in their office.
I recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with the “But we can’t because” syndrome. “I Love You More Than My Dog” is a collection of easy-to-read and understand case studies that provides thought provoking ideas on delivering customer service. She shows how companies overcame legal and regulatory barriers, fear of legal issues and “we’ve always done it this way” barriers to take customer service to new heights.
Read the entire book or just a few pages and you’ll immediately begin the process of self-reflection and focus on the parellel between the case studies and your work.
It’s not Pollyanna, it’s not an instruction book–but it is the first step to identifying problems and getting your plan in place. It forces you to think–and then act.
