As a newbie to low sodium diets, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. I found this book extremely helpful. The information it provided about sodium and its relationship to heart disease was very educational. Learning to create and enjoy low sodium meals was invaluable to me and my husband.
Help answer the question about Heart Association
If The American Heart Association recommends no?
more than 3,000 mg of sodium Heart Association daily, then why wouldn't there be a limit to all processed food manufacturers to keep sodium down?If you have a can of soup, tv dinner......... Wow!
The American Heart Association recommends eating foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids for increased heart health. Omega 3 fish oil supplements are a convenient way of increasing your intake of the healthy fatty acids DHA and EPA.
The benefits of increased consumption of Omega 3 fatty acids are:
- Lowered risk of arrhythmias, which can lead to sudden cardiac death
- Triglyceride levels are reduced
- Growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque is reduced
- Blood pressure can be reduced
The recommendations made are as follows:
- Persons who have no diagnosed Heart Association coronary heart disease (CHD) should eat fish (preferably fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, mackerel) at least twice a week.
- Patients diagnosed with CHD should get about 1 g of EPA+DHA per day. Fatty fish is recommended but Omega 3 supplements containing EPA+DHA in capsule form can be used. Consult with your physician.
- To lower triglycerides patients should have 2 to 4 grams of EPA+DHA per day. Omega 3 supplementary capsules are recommended. Consult with your physician.
Omega 3 fish oil capsules are an excellent alternative choice for those who are averse to eating more fish or when oily fish sorts are not easily available. These fish oil capsules are pure, concentrated and easily taken.
Omega 3 capsules are manufactured by a process called micro distillation which removes pollutants such as methyl mercury and concentrates the Omega 3 fats DHA and EPA in the end product.
When choosing a product study the levels of contaminants and the levels of DHA and EPA on the packaging. Choose the product that is of highest quality, free of pollutants and rich in DHA and EPA.
You can increase the health of your heart using Omega 3 Fish oil capsules and live a healthier, happier life.

This book is full of great recipes whether you have diabetes or not. I have many many favorite recipes from this book. Most are easy to prepare.
Great book and I would highly recommend it.
Recently purchased to cook some meals for a neighbor who’s wife passed away on Jan. 10, 2008. Was a huge help as he is diabetic and has heart disease.
I bought this cookbook for my Mom who is a brittle type 2 diabetic who recently had a heart attack. I wanted to give her meal ideas so she doesn’t despair over having to limit her diet further b/c of her recent heart problems. I’ve only looked through it, I’m giving it to her today. But I’m really surprised at the sugar content in the recipes. I would expect 1-5 grams here & there but some of these recipes are really high. And if you are looking for a cook book that has some ideas for diabetic friendly desserts, this is not the book. Out of the 13 dessert recipes the sugar grams range from 4-26 grams; for an average grams of 12.5. I’m surprised & a bit disappointed.
Great cookbook, especially if you are on a restrictive diet due to medical or health related circumstances. We have tried many of the dishes and have found them to be (well, almost to be) very excellent and both flavor, texture and taste. For the health benefits derived it is totally worth the effort.
This cook book is amazingly good. I’m not much of a cook so I had to buy a lot of new spices. All of the recipes I have tried so far are wonderful! I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone that loves food, but wants to eat healthy. It proves that eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring and bland.
I am an excellent cook and prepare a homecooked meal every evening and entertain often. The recipes I have tried…probably 12 …have been generally excellent. We like a lot of seasoning. When the recipe has contained small amounts of hot sauce or jalapeno peppers, it has been plenty flavorful. Some of the other have required more garlic or other seasoning for our liking which is easy to adjust. Have tried a cucumber relish over baked salmon (I grilled it) which surprised me by being fabulous, a pineapple soy sauce over sesame tuna (and I had no sesame so it was grilled tuna) also excellent. Everything has been flavorful (esp once I ramp up the garlic) and excellent and easy to make. I made a pounded chicken breast with a lemon sauce…however the lemon sauce, made with the chicken bits in the pan only called for a couple of tablespoons of water and maybe one of lemon to cook down for 60 seconds to thicken. I did find that for me…it evaporated before it cooked down. Next time I am going to add a lot more seasoning to the chicken and then add more liquid to the sauce…but a higher percentage of lemon…and then will add fat free yogurt to bulk up the sauce.
I also have given this, and AHA Meals in Minutes and Olive Oil Cookbook as gifts. The recipients have also given rave reviews.
When this book arrived, I spent hours looking through it and noting recipes I wanted to try. I collect cookbooks and love to cook, but unfortunately most of my recipes are not heart (or body) healthy. That’s why I am so enthralled with this one. The recipes I’ve tried so far are fantastic. Now I can cook to my heart’s delight and for my heart’s health at the same time.
There are several great recipes in this book. I bought this, and the AHA Meals in Minutes cookbook, at the same time. The disappointing aspect of the book is that many of the recipes rely on already prepard/processed foods (i.e. canned cream soup, etc…) True, the recipes call for the ‘lower-sodium’ version of the soups, but, to try and be healthy, eating all the chemical crud that’s in these soups seems like a dumb idea. So, while there are many recipes that I’ll make (modifying the recipes to use non-prepared/processed foods), I probably won’t buy any more of the AHA cookbooks.
NO FAD DIETS WAS QUITE EXPENSIVE IN BOOKSTORES. AMAZON OFFERED THE BOOK AT A MUCH LOWER PRICE. SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT. ORDERING WAS A SIMPLE TASK AND DELIVERY TOOK TWO DAYS. WHAT MORE CAN ANYONE ASK? I HAVE PURCHSED MANY THINGS FROM AMAZON – NINTENDO GAMES, CONTROLLER PADS = NUMMEROUS BOOKS FOR MY GRANDCHILDERENS LIBRARY AND FOR MY OWN LIBRARY. I HAVE NEVER BEEN DISATIFEFIED WITH ANY PURCHASES THROUGH THE YEARS.BECAUSE OF THIS I NEVERBUY ANYTHING UNLESSI CHECK IT OUT WITH AVAZON.

This book is based on stopping you from using anything but the American Heart one-size fits all diet. The AHA has always been strong on what it doesn’t like but a little weak on what it does like. It is low fat diet despite the fact that the AHA has quietly removed its official recommendation against total fat. The recent review by Ron Krauss showing that the recommendation against saturated fat is also not based on evidence was greeted with the response from Robert Eckel (likely major author of this book) that the data don’t change anything. The book is characterized by an absence of scientific references, no data or even anecdotal evidence that the diet works, and has a literary style analogous to the low-fat milk that it consistently recommends. Best is the recommendation of animal crackers as a snack. (It has probably changed but at the time the book was written animal crackers contained trans-fats). This book contains the diet recommended for the past forty years during the epidemic of obesity and diabetes for which the proponents have been able to blame the patient.
