The earliest collection of recipes that has been discovered in Europe is De re coquinaria, which was written in Latin. There was an even earlier version of cookery book which was compiled in the 1st century. All these historic books had been more of a compilation of preferred recipes of the author or a training manual for the chefs who had been trained to cook for banquets and elite households. They didn't contain the food and cuisines preferred amongst the peasants plus the frequent mass. The earliest cookbooks recognized in Arabic are those of al-Warraq (10th century) and al-Baghdadi (13th century).

What are some good Brazilian recipes?
My grandmother was from Brazil, and my dad remembers her cooking some great food when he was little. But then she divorced and got re-married to an all-American meat and potatoes guy, and never cooked anything ethnic again. Plus, we can't find any of her recipes written down on paper or in cookbooks.
Does anyone know of a few good recipes that does not require too many ingredients that I probably don't have in my pantry?? I don't mind buying a few new things at the food store, but I don't want this to be too difficult.
Couve-flor gratinada (baked cauliflower)
Ingredients:
1 medium cauliflower
4 soup spoons of butter or margarine (I use Olivio, it is healthier)
100g grated Parmesan cheese
6 soup spoons of the broth in which you cooked the cauliflower
1 coffee spoon of ground nutmeg
1 (shallow) dessert spoon of corn starch
4 soup spoons plain bread crumbs
Preparation: wash the cauliflower, separate the little "trees" and cut the stems that are too long.
Boil them in water (more water then cauliflower
for approx. 7 min. Separate the 6 spoons of the broth for the cream and drain the rest of the water.
Get a baking dish, like pyrex, and put the cauliflower in it.
Now you're going to make the cream.
Mix all the remaining ingredients, but separate the bread crumbs (don't use it yet). Cover the cauliflower with this mixture and with the tips of your fingers, carefully sprinkle the bread crumbs, spreading it all over the cauliflower.
Put it in the oven at 400 F for about 10 minutes to gratinate.
After this, it's ready to be served, enjoy!
I made this recipe again last week, my husband is American and he loves it!
You could also cook the cauliflower (without the cream, in the beginning) in the microwave, high power for 6 to 8 min, and waiting 3 for it to cool off. But I prefer to boil it.
This recipe is a side dish, and it serves 6 to 8 portions.
Just a note here for you. We make bacalhoada (codfish) in Brazil but it is a recipe from Portugal (where they have a lot of codfish). Our cuisine has really a lot of influence from France, Portugal and Italy, but there are also many dishes that originated in Brazil.
It truly is rather very easy for some cookbooks to come across as being intimidating, but this is mostly considering that the dishes included inside the cookbooks are largely unfamiliar to the non-gourmet chef. There are numerous books which are basically filled with 'designer' recipes that just are not practical for real people wanting to develop actual meals. Luckily, the truth is, not all of them are developed equal. You can find books on the market that are basic, quick to use and will have you cooking up a 'gourmet' storm in not time; generating you the envy of your 'blown away' friends and family members.
Countless of the restaurants are owned by chefs who also like to bring out new creations and are willing to share the recipes of the same. This also gives them an opportunity to promote their restaurants in addition to the unique delicacies developed by them. Restaurant cookbooks serve as a valuable promotional tool along with a means of earning additional revenue. A few of the prominent restaurants focus on 1 certain theme and the cook book is also fairly designed on this layout. You will find some restaurants which provide only vegetarian food and going by the current trend of folks opting for a healthy vegetarian diet, there are actually some wonderful books which feature these recipes. Chicago Diner: Vegetarian Cookbook by Chef Jo A Kaucher is 1 such book which has been brought out by Chicago Diner Restaurant and offers the best of their vegetarian dishes. Apart from this, you'll find a number of other cook books which feature regional and ethnic cooking styles and recipes. They feature recipes that are specific to a specific region like the Spanish, Chinese, Thai Food or the French Cuisine. A few of the best recipes could be located in Betty Crocker's Cookbook: Everything You Have to have to Know to Cook Today by Betty Crocker.
